Croatia edge past Turkey in Group D opener

Croatia picked up all 3 points against Turkey in their Group D match in Paris, after a stunning strike by Real Madrid’s Luka Modric.

Modric scored the only goal of the match in the 41st minute, which ended up being enough for Croatia to secure the victory.

Croatia started as the better team, with Srna and Perisic creating good opportunities on both wings. Rakatic and Modric also proved good attacking threats, with the former playing the ball towards Mandzukic only for Hakan Balta to clear.

Croatia continued to press, but it was Turkey who had the best chance in the first half when an Arda Turan cross meeting Tufan, only for his free header to be scrambled off the line by Subasic.

However, an inspired piece of personal genius from Modric broke the deadlock as he struck the ball with a first-time into the bottom corner from 30 yards out.

In the second-half Croatia continued to press, with both Perisic and Srna hitting the crossbar. Despite late pressure from Turkey, Croatia held on to claim a deserved 3 points in Paris.
