Bundesliga round-up (Gameweek 2)

The Bundesliga is usually filled with thrills and spills and this gameweek was no exception.

Schalke 04 vs Bayern Munich

I did a report on the Friday night game. You can read all about it with the link above.

Freiberg vs Borussia Monchengladbach

Champions League club Borussia Monchengladbach blew their one goal lead as they were defeated by newly promoted Freiburg.

Freiburg nearly drew first blood when their striker Niederlechner struck the post with his low, drilled shot from outside the box. But it was Monchengladbach who scored first with Thorgan Hazard smashing it into the top left corner of the net. His shot from outside the area was the perfect crowning of an exquisite team move. Hazard giving his team the lead going into the break and continuing his excellent recent form.

Freiburg very nearly equalised soon after halftime as Grifo’s deflected free-kick caused pandemonium in the box which eventually ended up in Turkish centre-back Soyuncu looping an overhead kick over the bar. Freiburg then did equalise through Max Philipp who after dragging the ball across sideways to find space whipped it in from the edge of the area leaving Sommer with no option but to let it go in.

Philipp added to his earlier goal with another fantastic finish in the 85th minute. Lax defending allowed Philipp to let Petersen’s header bounce along and when in an ideal position the German forward hit it first time from the right hand side of the box and he rifled it into the bottom corner.

Things went from bad to worse for Monchengladbach when Jantschke’s poor pass was intercepted by Grifo who took the ball and sprinted with it until through on goal. He easily beat Sommer with a feint but the Swiss keeper desperate to keep his team in the game by any means necessary used his hands to bring Grifo down. The referee only issued a booking for Sommer. Petersen converted the penalty with a powerful strike which met the bottom left corner of the net.

Freiburg easily closed out the game. A game in which they produced an excellent comeback and probably more than made up for the disappointment of losing their last game against Hertha Berlin in stoppage time. Monchengladbach however will feel extremely disappointed to lose to the newly promoted Freiburg. Especially off the back of an excellent win against Bayer Leverkusen.

Wolfsburg vs Koln

Wolfsburg struggled to break down a strong Koln defense as the two drew 0-0 at the Volkswagen Arena

Koln had a decent chance early on with Osaka heading the ball backwards towards Lehmann who hit it straight at Casteels. Wolfsburg had a similar chance when Caligiuri passed it off to Gomez. With his back to goal, Gomez turned and hit a left-footed shot from the edge of the area which Muller saving it with ease.

Modeste missed an excellent opportunity. Riise played a brilliant long ball through to the striker who missed while one-on-one with Casteels due to a mis-hit.
