Earlier in the week controversial character Joseph Barton returned to English football after Burnley resigned him. Joey is a player that gains a lot of attraction from the media and fans for mostly the wrong reasons (including recently being charged by the FA after betting incidents) but in this article I’ll be looking at why Joey Barton is an intelligent singing from Burnley and Sean Dyche.
One thing Joey Barton isn’t short of is passion and leadership skills, and Burnley are a side in desperate need of those two things.
The Clarets are a side that are undoubtedly in a relegation battle this season but are not as bad of a side as the league table suggests, midfielders like Jeff Hendrick in the side offer some attacking threat. This was highlighted with his wonder strike against Bournemouth and if you were to partner Hendrick with Barton you then have a good balance of central midfielders with one better at going forward and the other more than capable of sitting deep and defending aggressively.
Joey Barton was almost a second captain to the Burnley side that won the Championship last season whilst going 23 games unbeaten, his familiarity with the side will mean he won’t need time to ‘settle in’ and can knuckle down and get to business straight away. The Burnley fans really took to Barton last season and will be a massive confidence boost for them having him back at the club.
I’ve always been a firm believer that Barton has been very underrated during his career, especially during his period at Newcastle when partnering Yohan Cabaye in midfield. Barton was an influential member of that Newcastle side taking the majority of set pieces including penalties until Cabaye took over the duty.
I can fully understand why many people dislike Joey but just because he has made some mistakes in the past it doesn’t mean he’s an awful footballer. He has the ability to control games and offer sides a lot more than just footballing ability.
Barton was majorly influential in both Newcastle’s and Burnley’s return to the Premier League, despite Barton being a good signing from the Clarets, I think that they will need more than just Joey Barton this January window in order to help them to Premier League safety. However I believe Barton will be a major factor to their safety should they achieve it.
