Who will win the Premier League 2016/17 Golden Boot?

More than half of the season has been played and the race for the Golden Boot is as competitive as ever. Here are the five players in contention to win the Golden Boot.

Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)

15 goals scored

7 assists

A role change for Alexis Sanchez has worked wonders this season. The Chilean forward has moved from out wide to up front and his game has massively improved. He has beaten last season’s total of 13 goals and should go on to score 20+ league goals this term. Sanchez has been one of Arsenal’s most important players. His 98th minute penalty against Burnley sealed a crucial victory for the Gunners and is just one instance where he has been the difference for his team.

Chances of winning the Golden Boot: 4/5

Diego Costa (Chelsea)

15 goals scored

5 assists

Last season was not good for Diego Costa or Chelsea but both parties have put it behind them. They are currently eight points clear at the top of the league and Costa have been a huge part of that. Chelsea have won four matches with a 1-0 scoreline and Costa scored the match winning goal on three occasions. The 15 goals he has scored this season is three more than he managed last term. Diego Costa is undoubtedly Chelsea’s main striker but they can cope without him. He missed the games against Bournemouth and Leicester City but Chelsea were still 3-0 winners in both games.

Chances of winning the Golden Boot: 4/5

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Manchester United)

14 goals scored

3 assists

Despite being 35, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still at the top of his game. He is a proven goalscorer and oozes confidence every time he steps onto the pitch. Zlatan’s influence within the team is clear to see and his 14 goals have kept Man United in contention for the top four. His late equaliser against Liverpool denied the Reds their first Premier League win of 2017. However, Ibrahimovic has off days like every other player and that is where his team-mates come in.

Chances of winning the Golden Boot: 3/5

Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur)

13 goals scored

3 assists

When Harry Kane is missing from the squad, Spurs aren’t as strong without him and Vincent Janssen is not a worthy replacement. Kane missed five Premier League games with an ankle injury earlier in the season and Spurs won twice and drew three times. The England international won the Golden Boot last season with 25 goals. Dele Alli is chipping in with more goals this season, so there is not as much pressure on Kane but if they are to maintain a title challenge, his goals will be crucial.

Chances of winning the Golden Boot: 3/5

Romelu Lukaku (Everton)

12 goals scored

4 assists

Everton finished in the disappointing position of 11th last season but Romelu Lukaku still managed to score 18 goals. This was the highest amount of goals he had scored since his loan spell at West Brom in the 12/13 season (17 goals). The Belgian striker is a fantastic player and at the age of 23, he is still yet to completely fulfill his potential. Lukaku has scored 12 goals already this season so he is likely to surpass his best Premier League tally again but I think he will fall short of winning the Golden Boot.

Chances of winning the Golden Boot: 2/5

With Chelsea eight points clear, the Premier League title is theirs to lose. Diego Costa is the most likely winner of the Golden Boot this season but it will be close. Hopefully there will be plenty of twists and turns before the 16/17 season comes to an end.
