With the Championship entering the business end of the season, it’s now when strikers really need to turn on the style. Currently, Chris Wood is the top scorer with 22 goals, Dwight Gayle second with 21 goals, followed closely by Tammy Abraham with 18 goals. I decided to look at who will finish the season as top scorer and analyse the three strikers.

Chris Wood
Leeds’ striker Chris Wood has scored 22 goals in 33 games, an average of 0.6 goals per game. Wood was signed from Leicester City for a fee rumoured to be around £2-£3 million. The striker from New Zealand has been a key factor in Leeds’ promotion hopes. This season Wood has had 87 shots meaning an average of a goal every four shots (there or there about) plus a respectable shot accuracy of 56%. All stats from Squawka. He has an average of a goal every 124 minutes.

Dwight Gayle
Gayle has been Newcastle’s star striker this season, scoring an impressive 21 goals in 25 games. Yes, Wood has scored more goals than Gayle, however, Wood has played eight more games than Gayle. Really, the reason Wood is the current top scorer is because Gayle has been injured as of late. Gayle was purchased for around £9 million from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2016 in essentially a swap for Andros Townsend who went the other way. He has the highest shot accuracy of the three with 68% and the lowest amount of shots with 78 (a goal every 3.5 shots). Call me biased but I think Gayle is the best out of the three strikers.

Tammy Abraham
Finally, we have Tammy Abraham. The Chelsea loanee is currently playing for relegation-threatened Bristol City. Abraham has netted 18 goals in 30 matches which is quite impressive for a 19-year-old. It’s clear he has a bright future ahead of him, I just hope he gets a good run in the first team and doesn’t fall victim to the Chelsea loaning system. Abraham has a ratio of a goal every 142 minutes which is great considering it’ll be many years until he hits his peak.

My verdict
I’ll get straight to the point, I think that Gayle is the better of the three. I think he’s the better finisher and will finish the season as the league’s top scorer. The only reason why he isn’t the top scorer at the minute is because of his hamstring injury. Not that the other 2 aren’t good players, just Gayle is better.
