Arsenal have signed their first player of the summer, Sead Kolasinac, on a free transfer.
Sead Kolasinac has been linked with Arsenal for weeks and now the club has finally announced his arrival.
An Arsenal statement confirmed that Kolasinac will join this summer on a long-term contract. They also added that “subject to the completion of all regulatory processes, the defender will start pre-season training in July.”
The 23-year-old joins from Schalke with his contract expiring this summer. According to his former side, Kolasinac’s new contract with Arsenal “runs until 2022”. He has been named in the 2016/17 Bundesliga team of the season after contributing three goals and seven assists from 36 appearances in all competitions this season.
The confirmation of Kolasinac’s move could be costly for Kieran Gibbs. With Nacho Monreal ruling out a return to Spain and Gibbs already down the pecking order, he could be leaving this summer.
According to the Daily Star, Newcastle are interested in Gibbs and willing to meet Arsenal’s valuation.
Kolasinac, a Bosnia-Herzegovina international, is set to be Arsenal’s first choice left-back and left wing-back with Monreal as a more than able deputy.
Speaking in his first interview for Arsenal’s website, he said: “Arsenal has always been a club that is well recognised in Europe and I’m pleased to be here.
“I think my main strength is my mentality. I’m a player who will try to help the team as well as I can. My strengths are my mentality.
“I think left back is where I feel most comfortable. I can play as part of a three at the back too or further forward. I’m really flexible.”
Arsenal’s first signing of the summer is a promising one and at 23, Kolasinac is only going to get better.
