It’s nearly time. Pre-season has been concluded and the Premier League awaits. However, are United ready and what can Newcastle fans expect from the new season.
Are Newcastle match ready?
The answer in my opinion is no. United still seem well off the pace for the new season. The Magpies still appear to have a lack of depth in attack.
United have been linked in recent weeks with Arsenal striker Lucas Perez. As well as this Diego Rolan has also been linked.
However, any concrete evidence of these deals coming off are non existent. The papers this year have proven to have no real knowledge of the club. However, this is nothing new.
Newcastle have been building a squad this window. Benitez has signed numerous squad players to build a squad rather than a team which past managers have done.
Manquillo in particluar seems a good signing to improve the squad. Clearly he is not up to the standard needed as shown at Sunderland.
However, there is no reason why he cannot be an excellent squad player. Too many times in previous seasons Newcastle have been caught out by their lack of depth.
This has cost the club points in relegation battles in the past and that should change now. The defence has been strengthened hugely.
Lejeune already looks to be an excellent signing. Talented with his feet and a strong defender. He should be starting for United in the opening game against Spurs.
However, United must sign some more first team players for the season ahead. With the countdown on to the end of the transfer window time is running out.
With little money left in the pot United have to be careful who they spend their money on. What Benitez has already said is that we should trust the process.
For me that’s what we should do otherwise we could end up in dire straits.
