Arsenal: Five of Olivier Giroud’s best goals

Olivier Giroud has scored 99 goals since joining Arsenal in 2012. While he seemingly takes forever to reach his century in red and white, here are five of his best goals to date.

5. Manchester City 0-2 Arsenal (Sunday 18th January 2015) – Premier League

Santi Cazorla was instrumental in this win against Man City (how Arsenal could do with him now) as he scored one and set up another. His second-half free kick was met by Olivier Giroud who headed in from close range as he often does. This is one of Giroud’s best assets. He evades his marker and powers in unstoppable headers. Giroud’s goal helped Arsenal to their first away win at Man City since October 2010.

4. Liverpool 3-3 Arsenal (Wednesday 13th January 2016) – Premier League

In a thrilling match at Anfield, Giroud’s brace nearly gave Arsenal all three points until a 90th minute intervention from Joe Allen, now of Stoke City. The second goal Giroud scored was a thing of beauty. The Frenchman turned Kolo Toure with ease and fired into the bottom corner. Arsenal didn’t get all three points but it was still a fantastic goal.

3. Bayern Munich 5-1 Arsenal (Wednesday 4th November 2015) – Champions League

Surprise surprise, Arsenal and Bayern faced each other in the group stages of the Champions League. Arsenal were thrashed by the German champions as is usually the case but Olivier Giroud scored the best goal of the night. The Frenchman met Alexis Sanchez’s lofted cross with his chest and then finished on the half volley to deny Manuel Neuer a clean sheet.

2. Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa (Saturday 30th May 2015) – FA Cup

Arsenal dominated the 2015 FA Cup final against Aston Villa and were 3-0 up within 62 minutes. With the game done and dusted, Arsenal could have been satisfied with three goals but Olivier Giroud certainly wasn’t. He got on the end of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s low pass into the box to flick the ball home after he was left virtually unmarked by Villa’s tired defence in stoppage time. It was the icing on the cake for Arsenal who were also the first team to win the FA Cup Final by more than one goal since 2004.

1. Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace (Sunday 1st January 2017) – Premier League

Olivier Giroud christened the new year with an absolute screamer. The debate continued for weeks about whether it was intentional or not. However, the skill involved was undeniable. Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick was simply magnificent. The striker met Alexis Sanchez’s ball in with his left foot, looping the ball over his head and in off the underside of the bar. It was just sublime. The man himself declared it as “the best goal I have ever scored”. How this didn’t win goal of the month, I’ll never know.
