Newcastle: United hold firm as the Reds leave St. James’ with a point

A fair result? That wasn’t the opinion of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. However, the continued defensive problems of Liverpool led to Newcastle snatching a point.

Klopp, in truth was harsh on Newcastle. United put in a solid performance as Liverpool’s attacking superstars failed to break through.

The pressure is on for Klopp at Anfield. The defensive woes of his side were once again exposed. In truth the Reds were toothless.

Without a fantastic strike from Coutinho Liverpool would have lost the game. A game they dominated with 67% of possession however only managed two shots on target.

For Klopp this will deeply worrying. However on the other hand Newcastle put in another performance typical of them this season.

Benitez has drilled United to function with very little possession absorbing the pressure from the opposition.

However, United struggled to make chances with so little possession similar to Liverpool today. A defensive mistake by the Liverpool defense let Joselu through who took his chance well.

However, for most of the game Joselu fell into the background. So to be sharp enough to poke home the finish shows his ability.

On the other hand, Ayoze Perez may have had his worst performance yet for Newcastle. Perez has been given so many chances to shine and hasn’t shown the quality needed.

Questions must be asked about his starting place for the Southampton game. Despite this Jonjo Shelvey today showed exactly why he is so highly rated.

Shelvey unlucky not to win the man of the match award in a great return to the starting line up earning himself an assist. However he was pipped by Matt Ritchie who was simply fantastic as usual.

The willingness of this Newcastle team to fight for the shirt is incredible. A hard fought well earned point was definitely a fair result for a Newcastle side who a growing from strength to strength in the Premier League.
