AC Milan have acted quick to squash speculation regarding the future of their star defender Leonardo Bonucci and say the player “totally believes in the Milan project.”
Gazzetta dello Sport and La Repubblica have reported that the Azzurri star has not been content with life at the San Siro and is potentially considering a transfer away from the club at the end of the season.
Not long after these reports were released, Milan responded with this:
“But how beautiful the rediscovery of Bonucci is! Suddenly we go from teasing about shifting the balance to the threat of a sudden abandonment of Milan and the interest of big clubs.
“In a nutshell, these really are inadmissible allegations. The reality is that Leo has already informally denied them. Not only that, he’ll do it formally too.
“Bonucci totally believes in the Milan project, and this just proves that pre-Christmas stories are absolutely based on nothing. The Rossoneri captain is working hard, just like all his teammates, to redeem himself and the whole of Milan, who are in a very negative position.”
Since these rumours begun to spread, some of the European giants have been keeping an eye on the situation. These clubs include Premier League leaders Manchester City and FC Barcelona.
Bonucci signed for Milan this summer from Juventus and was meant to be the star of a revolution for the Italian side, but that hasn’t really gone to plan so far. AC Milan currently sit 8th in Serie A and are struggling to improve on previous seasons. Losing Bonucci is the last thing Milan will want, but luckily it looks like he will be staying for the time being.
Milan’s next game is against 7th placed Atalanta on Saturday, and a win is crucial if they want to keep their hopes of playing continental football alive.
