Last night, Newcastle secured a 3-2 victory at the London Stadium to end their nine-match winless streak.
It was a disastrous start for Newcastle when Henri Saivet lost the ball on the half way line to Marko Arnautovic who ran down the pitch and slotted it past Rob Elliot. However, Saivet redeemed himself less than five minutes later with a free kick from a good distance out. The Senegalese midfielder curled a beauty of a shot into the bottom left corner to level up the scores.
Newcastle kept pressing and almost got a second when Matt Ritchie smacked the post with a powerful effort. The away side went into half time with the scores 1-1 but firmly in control.
West Ham had the first chance of the half when Arnautovic dragged a shot wide from a similar position to his goal. But then Newcastle’s dominance was rewarded when Christian Atsu nutmegged Pablo Zabaleta, put a cross into the box and Mo Diame blasted the ball home. A deserved lead for Newcastle. But then, West Ham were handed a lifeline when Michail Antonio went down in the box (dubious whether it was in the box) and were awarded a penalty.
When Newcastle needed a hero, Elliot was there to save the penalty which kept Newcastle ahead. The away side had West Ham dead and buried when Atsu slotted in Newcastle’s third. Joselu squared the ball across the box to Atsu who was never going to miss, a fantastic performance from the Ghanian.
However things weren’t over yet; and with 20 minutes to go, Andy Carroll knocked down a corner to Andre Ayew (making up for his penalty miss) and smashed the ball into an open net. Things were starting to get nervy for Newcastle. Despite the narrow scoreline, West Ham could not find an equalizer and Newcastle came home with all three points.
