With the January transfer window opening in a matter of hours, Newcastle must spend the cash to ensure Premier League survival.
1. Right back:
DeAndre Yedlin, Jesus Gamez, and Javi Manquillo are the natural right backs at the club. Newcastle’s style of play in the Championship suited Yedlin more because he could bomb forward and attack, however, he can’t do that in the Premier League which has exposed him defensively; Jesus Gamez never gets a run out to put it simply, and I really don’t think Javi Manquillo is good enough. Quite often an opposing team will focus on the flanks to expose Newcastle’s weakness in the fullback position which needs to be sorted out.
2. Centre midfield
The main creative force for Newcastle is Shelvey who can be a big liability. Shelvey has already picked up two red cards this season which is a major problem. I’m a massive fan of Merino but he can’t do two jobs at once. Newcastle needs a new playmaker to cover for Shelvey’s moments of madness. Going after Leganés’ Gabriel Pires wouldn’t be a bad idea because he is a similar player to Shelvey but more athletic.
Newcastle have 3 strikers: Dwight Gayle, Aleksander Mitrovic and Joselu. Mitrovic looks certain to leave in January, Gayle is a lightweight which can be a massive problem and Joselu doesn’t score enough goals. Joselu is a very hard worker but he just doesn’t score enough goals. Newcastle have been linked to Danny Ings and Islam Slimani. Both would be a risk but I think it’s a risk worth taking.
With the lack of funds and constant rumors of a takeover, this is going to be a very difficult transfer window for everybody connected to the club. It’s entirely possible nobody is signed and it Newcastle seals their fate of relegation, it’s going to be a long and tough time.
