As to be expected, Newcastle have already been linked with numerous players over this January transfer window.
#1 Jonjo Shelvey to West Ham (Express)
Over the past few days, a transfer for Jonjo Shelvey to West Ham for £12 million looks increasingly likely. There are two major reasons why I’m against this transfer. First of all, we’re aiding a rival who is in a similar situation to us; second of all, we’d be losing a player of significant technical ability.
Despite that, Shelvey can quite often be a liability in big games. Shelvey is quite inconsistent and has an exceptionally poor disciplinary record (racked up more red cards than goals and assists this season). I’m all for this transfer but only if we can bring in a suitable replacement.
#2 Jonathan Viera to Newcastle (Telegraph)
However unlikely this transfer is, I would be extremely happy if it went through. Newcastle are crying out for a good attacking playmaker and Jonathan Viera fits the bill perfectly. Last season he netted seven goals and got seven assists for Las Palmas, but this season the Spanish side are struggling and are stone dead last in La Liga. This could tempt them to sell, however knowing Mike Ashley it will be difficult to push through this £17.8 million transfer. If it’s possible, Newcastle should be all over this.
#3 Papa Souare to Newcastle (Geoff Peters)
A new story has emerged that Newcastle have held talks with Crystal Palace left-back Papa Souare. Last year the Senegalese international was involved in a car crash that almost cut his career short, however, he’s done incredibly well to come back to playing football. Obviously, after such a serious injury, it’s almost impossible to return to the same level but he could still be a good signing due to a shortage at left back. While it will be a helpful transfer, Newcastle really need to be looking at creators and strikers.
