English club Tottenham Hotspur have been given a huge boost in their pursuit of teenage sensation Matthijs de Ligt after it was reported by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that the defender is set to leave Ajax.
Rumours are that the 18-year-old is unhappy after his side were unable to be crowned Eredivisie champions this season, and in his past four seasons at the club. Due to this, the centre back is ready to seek a move to improve his career.
One club have been keeping their eye on de Ligt is Tottenham Hotspur, and it has been rumoured in the past few months that they are willing to pay a fee of £45 million for the Dutchman’s services (according to TalkSport, https://talksport.com/football/tottenham-hotspur-transfer-report-spurs-target-matthijs-de-ligt-wants-leave-ajax-summer).
With the news coming out of Amsterdam, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino will be licking his lips at the thought of someone of de Ligt heading to the Lilywhites this summer.
Pochettino and his Tottenham side have been on the lookout for reinforcement when it comes to defence with 29-year-old Toby Alderweireld linked with a move away from Spurs.
It is not only Tottenham who are looking to secure de Ligt’s signature, however. There has also been interest shown by Premier League champions Manchester City, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and La Liga champions FC Barcelona.
Despite only being 18, de Ligt has already made 79 appearances for the Dutch giants, and his potential has been compared to greats such as Frank Rijkaard and Frank de Boer.
Not only has de Ligt shined for Ajax, but he has also impressed on the international stage, making his debut for the Netherlands during a 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Bulgaria in March last year.
If de Ligt is hoping to play Champions League football next season, then a move to Tottenham would be ideal as Spurs secured their place in next season’s tournament after a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
de Ligt could be the second prospect to move from Ajax to Tottenham, after fellow centre back Davinson Sanchez signed for Spurs last summer for a reported £42 million.
